Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: presbyopia n., Greek ἄκουσις.
Etymology: < presby- (in presbyopia n.) + ancient Greek ἄκουσις hearing (see acoumeter n.). The β. forms show an alteration with suffix substitution: compare -ia suffix1. Compare French presbyacousie (1908).In forms presbycousis, presbycusis, presbykousis with elision of the initial vowel of the second element.
Medicine.
Deterioration of hearing commonly occurring with advancing age, usually affecting both ears and beginning with reduced sensitivity to higher-pitched sounds.
