单词 presa canario
释义

Presa Canarion.

Brit. /ˌpreɪzə kəˈnɛːrɪəʊ/, /ˌpreɪzə kəˈnɑːrɪəʊ/, U.S. /ˈˌpreɪzə kəˈnɛrioʊ/
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish presa canario.
Etymology: Apparently < Spanish presa canario, short for perro de presa canario , literally ‘Canary prey dog’ (both 1982 or earlier) < perro de presa hunting dog (1526; < perro dog (1184; of uncertain and disputed origin) + de of (see de prep.) + presa prey (a1272), booty (beginning of the 14th cent.; < an unattested post-classical Latin form *prensa things taken, use as noun of neuter plural of classical Latin prēnsus , past participle of prendere prend v.)) + canario (adjective) of, originating from, or relating to the Canary Islands (late 15th cent. or earlier), use as adjective of Canaria (see Canary n.1).Despite the statement in quot. 1986, the Spanish term is unlikely to have been used before the second half of the 20th cent., although the Canary hunting dog was certainly known earlier.
A breed of large, powerful dog related to the mastiff, developed in the Canary Islands and used as a guard dog or (formerly) fighting dog; a dog of this breed.
