Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian presa.
Etymology: < Italian presa (a1590 in this sense), probably a specific sense of presa handle (although this is apparently first attested later: 1677), act of taking (late 12th cent. or earlier), use as noun of feminine of past participle of prendere to take (see prend v.).
Music.
A symbol used in a canon, fugue, etc., to mark the entry of a voice or instrument.
