Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French prenotarie; Latin prenotarius.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman prenotarie, prenotorie, preignatorie (late 13th cent.) and its etymon post-classical Latin prenotarius chief clerk, protonotary (c1200, a1275, c1290 in British sources), alteration (after classical Latin prae- pre- prefix) of protonotarius prothonotary n. Compare prothonotary n. and later pronotary n.Apparently originally stressed on either the third or the first syllable, as indicated by the spelling history. The modern stress pattern is probably after notary n.
Now historical and rare.
The chief clerk of a court of law; = prothonotary n. 1b.
