Etymology: Apparently imitative (see quot. 1955 at main sense).
Originally U.S.
A development of jazz, begun in the U.S. at the end of the 1939–45 war, characterized by complex harmony, dissonant chords and highly syncopated rhythm. Also attributive.P. Tamony in Jazz (1959) II. 114–19 cites instances of bebop, rebop, bop, etc., as onomatopœic or nonsense syllables, from jazz recordings of 1928 on: e.g. McKinney's Cotton Pickers, Four or Five Times (1928), Bop-do-de-de-do-do..Bebop one, bebop two, bebop three.

Eventually the word became shortened and ‘bop’ was accepted as the name for the new branch of jazz.
