Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pre- prefix, excellence n.
Etymology: < pre- prefix + excellence n. Compare post-classical Latin praeexcellentia (8th cent.), Middle French, French préexcellence (1551). Compare slightly earlier precellence n. (and the Latin and French forms cited at that entry).
Now rare.
Pre-eminent excellence; absolute superiority.
