Etymology: Partly < Spanish premio (1251 in an isolated example; subsequently from a1384), and partly < Italian premio (a1306), both < classical Latin praemium premium n. Compare Portuguese prêmio (14th cent.). Compare earlier premie n.1Not fully naturalized in English.
A premium; (in early use esp.) an insurance premium; (also) a reward or prize; a bonus added to interest or to a payment. Cf. premium n.Now chiefly historical except (in non-naturalized use) in the proper names of prizes and awards in Spanish and Italian.
