单词 predator
释义

predatorn.

Brit. /ˈprɛdətə/, U.S. /ˈprɛdədər/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin praedātor.
Etymology: < classical Latin praedātor plunderer, pillager, robber, person or animal that goes after prey, hunter, ravisher ( < praedāt- , past participial stem of praedārī pread v. + -or -or suffix). Compare Middle French, French prédateur plunderer (1574), person who lives on booty or plunder (1745), animal that preys on other animals (1909 in adjectival use). With sense 2 perhaps compare scientific Latin Predatores, denoting a tribe of beetles (W. Swainson in W. Swainson & W. E. Shuckard On Hist. & Nat. Arrangement of Insects (1840) ii. iii. 115).Quot. 1581 at sense 1 apparently shows an isolated early borrowing.
