Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: predation n., predatory adj., -ive suffix; Latin praedāt- , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < either predat- (in either predation n. or predatory adj.) or classical Latin praedāt-, past participial stem of praedārī to plunder, spoil (see pread v.) + -ive suffix, after native adj., passive adj., etc. Compare earlier predatory adj., predacious adj., and also predatism n., predate v.2
Characterized by or suggestive of predation; = predatory adj.
