Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: predation n., predatory adj., -ism suffix; Latin praedāt- , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < either predat- (in either predation n. or predatory adj.) or classical Latin praedāt-, past participial stem of praedārī to plunder, spoil (see pread v.) + -ism suffix, perhaps after French prédatisme (1903 or earlier). Compare predative adj., predate v.2
