The forward continuation of the retina as a thin layer of pigmented epithelium running from the ora serrata over the ciliary body and posterior surface of the iris; the ciliary and iridic parts of the retina.

1890 Cent. Dict. Preretina, the thin stratum of columnar nucleated cells continued forward from the ora serrata of the retina as far as the tips of the ciliary processes, where it gives place to the uveal pigment.
1995 Exper. Eye Res. 61 469 Small droplets ingested by mononuclear cells were found in the vitreous cavity or preretina at 4–6 months.
