Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French prepuce.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French prepuce (French prépuce ) foreskin (end of the 13th cent. in Old French) < classical Latin praepūtium preputium n. In sense 2 after post-classical Latin praeputium state of the uncircumcised (frequently in Pauline writings in Vulgate, e.g. 1 Corinthians 7:19 and Romans 2:25, the passages translated in quots. c1475 at sense 2 and 1582 at sense 2), transferred use of classical Latin praepūtium (see above); compare Old French prepuce (end of the 12th cent.), Middle French prepuce (1553). In sense 3 after post-classical Latin praeputium unplucked (ritually forbidden) fruit (Vulgate, Leviticus 19:23), itself after biblical Hebrew ʿorlāh foreskin, uncircumcised glans, (forbidden) fruit of the first three years of planting. Compare earlier prepucy n., preputium n.Compare Old Occitan prepuci foreskin, uncircumcision (14th cent. in both senses; Occitan prepuci), Catalan prepuci foreskin (15th cent.), Spanish prepucio foreskin, uncircumcision (a1260 in both senses in a translation of the New Testament), Portuguese prepúcio foreskin (15th cent.), Italian prepuzio foreskin (a1364).
