单词 acrobat
释义

acrobatn.

Brit. /ˈakrəbat/, U.S. /ˈækrəˌbæt/
Forms: 1800s acrobate, 1800s– acrobat.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French acrobate.
Etymology: < French acrobate (1698 denoting a type of rope dancer in antiquity, in the passage translated in quot. 1700; early 19th cent. denoting a tightrope walker; subsequently in broader use) < Byzantine Greek ἀκροβάτης acrobat (4th cent. in a papyrus; also attested in inscriptions) < ancient Greek ἀκρο- acro- comb. form + -βάτης < stem of βαίνειν to go (see basis n.) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns. Not securely attested in classical Latin, but acrobatēs has been suggested at Vitruvius 10.7.4 where the manuscripts read angubatae (plural). The form occurs in post-classical Latin in 1698 (alongside the French form) in the passage translated in quot. 1700.
An entertainer who performs spectacular gymnastic feats. Also in extended use: an animal which climbs or perches nimbly. Also figurative.
