Origin: Of uncertain origin, Perhaps formed within English, by derivation.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; compare -ant suffix1. With the first element perhaps compare early modern Dutch prats stubborn, arrogant (1603), Middle Low German prattich, (rare) prattesch discontent, stubborn.Compare Scots (north-eastern) pradgie vain, forward, cocksure (20th cent.; apparently derived from this word).
English regional (southern) and rare in later use.
Conceited, arrogant.
