Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Dutch, combined with an English element. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Dutch prangen , -le suffix 3; -le suffix 3
Etymology: Either < Middle Dutch prangen to press, oppress, to wrestle, to fight (Dutch prangen : see below) + -le suffix 3, or < the reflex of an unattested Old English cognate of the Middle Dutch verb + -le suffix 3. Compare prong n.1, prong n.2Middle Dutch prangen is cognate with Middle Low German prangen to fight, to strain (German regional (Low German) prangen to press), Gothic -praggan (in anapraggan to oppress), and (from a variant of the same base with suffix causing i-mutation) Middle High German phrengen to press, oppress (also (rare) phrangen; German pfrengen; now regional (southern)); further etymology uncertain.
