Etymology: < classical Latin Pramnium Pramnian wine (Pliny; use as noun (short for Pramnium vinum) of neuter of Pramnius, adjective (not otherwise attested) < ancient Greek Πράμνιος (in Πράμνιος οἶνος Pramnian wine)) + -an suffix.The name is of unknown origin. Athenaeus says that the wine comes from a mountain beside the Pramnian rock (Hellenistic Greek Πράμνιος πέτρα ) on the island of Icarus; Pliny says the wine comes from Smyrna (see quot. 1601 at sense A.).
