Etymology: < French posé composed, poised (1538 in Middle French), (of an animal) standing still, on its four paws (1681 in a heraldic context), use as adjective of past participle of poser pose v.1Senses A. 3, A. 4, and the specific uses as noun are apparently not recorded in dictionaries of French, but compare posé (noun, of a horse) action of putting one hoof on the ground (1869 in Littré). With sense A. 4 compare earlier posed adj.3 With sense B. 2 compare earlier pose n.6 1.
