单词 pouncet-box
释义

pouncet-boxn.

Brit. /ˈpaʊnsᵻtbɒks/, U.S. /ˈpaʊnsətˌbɑks/
Forms: 1500s pouncet boxe, 1600s– pouncet-box.
Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by compounding. Or perhaps (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, box n.2; English pounced box.
Etymology: Either < a first element of uncertain origin (perhaps < either pounce v.1 or pounce n.1 + -et suffix1) + box n.2, or perhaps originally a misprint for pounced box, lit. ‘pieced or perforated box’ ( < pounced adj.1 + box n.2). Compare later pouncet n. In quot. 1863 apparently by confusion with pounce box n. at pounce n.3 Compounds 1; compare also quot. 1899 at pouncet n.A Shakespearean term revived by Scott: see quot. 1820.
Now historical.
Apparently: a small box with a perforated lid, used for holding perfumes. In quot. 1863: a box for pounce or powder (cf. pounce box n. at pounce n.3 Compounds 1).
