Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French poularde.
Etymology: < French poularde (1660; earlier as †pollarde (1562 in Middle French)) < poule hen (see pull n.2) + -arde , feminine form corresponding to -ard -ard suffix.In poulard wheat n. at Compounds after French blé poulard (1872), earlier as †blé poulart (1606) < blé wheat (see blade n.) + poulart (1606, apparently only in this phrase) < poule hen (see poule n.) + -art (see -ard suffix), the large, swollen grains of rivet wheat being compared in appearance to a fattened hen.
A young domestic hen fattened for eating; a spayed hen. Cf. capon n. 1a.
