Etymology: Origin uncertain. Apparently related to later pook n., and perhaps also to earlier poukwain n., although the exact nature of the relationship is unclear. Compare also later pout n.³ Middle Eng. Dict. at that entry suggests a connection with puck n.¹, comparing the place name Pokshudde (1332), Pokeshedde (1377), now Puckshot Farm, Godalming, Surrey (i.e. the same locality as the provenance of the quots. below), in which puck n.¹ appears as first element (lit. ‘goblin's hut’), but the semantic development would be unclear.

Obsolete. rare.
