单词 pouker
释义

poukern.

Forms: late Middle English powker.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Apparently related to later pook n., and perhaps also to earlier poukwain n., although the exact nature of the relationship is unclear. Compare also later pout n.3 Middle Eng. Dict. at that entry suggests a connection with puck n.1, comparing the place name Pokshudde (1332), Pokeshedde (1377), now Puckshot Farm, Godalming, Surrey (i.e. the same locality as the provenance of the quots. below), in which puck n.1 appears as first element (lit. ‘goblin's hut’), but the semantic development would be unclear.
Obsolete. rare.
A mound or pile of hay; a haycock. Cf. pook n.
