Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pouf.
Etymology: < French pouf, pouff kind of elaborate female headdress worn in the late 18th cent. (1775), low seat (usually cylindrical in shape) with no back (1859), part of a dress or skirt gathered up to form a bunch (1869 or earlier), of imitative origin. Compare puff n., puff int.With sense 2a compare earlier puff n. 4b. With sense 3 compare slightly earlier puff n. 4e.
