单词 pou sto
释义

pou ston.

Brit. /ˌpuː ˈstəʊ/, U.S. /ˈpu ˈstoʊ/
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ποῦ στῶ.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ποῦ στῶ ‘where I may stand’ ( < ancient Greek ποῦ where (adverb representing an original genitive < the same Indo-European base as who pron. and n.) + στῶ , 1st person singular aorist subjunctive of ἱστάναι to stand: see stand v.); from the saying attributed to Archimedes (in Pappus 8. 11., ed. F. Hultsch (1878), p. 1060), δός μοι ποῦ στῶ, καὶ κινῶ τὴν γῆν ‘give me (a place) where I may stand, and I will move the earth’.The Hellenistic Greek phrase more frequently occurs in English contexts written in Greek script:1859 J. R. Lowell Biglow Papers 1st Ser. (new ed.) Introd. 58 Accustomed to move the world with no ποῦ στῶ but his own two feet.1911 J. Ward Realm of Ends iii. 67 This is the physical basis which is supposed to furnish teleology with its indispensable ποῦ στῶ.1967 Philos. Rev. 76 181 The self-stultifying form appears to be shorn of its ποῦ στῶ. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pɑu stōu, properly pū stō) /paʊ stəʊ/, properly /puː stɔː/.
