Etymology: < classical Latin acroāma item in an entertainment, and its etymon ancient Greek ἀκρόαμα anything heard (especially with pleasure), piece read, recited, played, or sung < ἀκροᾶσθαι to hear (see acroasis n.) + -μα (see -oma comb. form). Compare acroasis n. and (especially with sense 1) acroatic adj., acroatics n., acroamatical adj., acroamatic adj., acroamatics n., and foreign-language forms cited at those entries.
