Etymology: Variant of pothecary n. (compare α forms at that entry). Compare pottingar n.Although attested slightly later, the β. forms apparently reflect an intermediate stage with -g- in place of the -c- of pothecary n.; on the development of intrusive -n- before -g- see discussion at messenger n. N.E.D. (1907) indicates the stress as ˈpottingary.
