Origin: A borrowing from French; originally modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymon: French postposer.
Etymology: < Middle French, French postposer to place after, neglect (1377; now rare in this sense; mid 16th cent. as past participle in grammatical sense (rare); subsequently from 1949) < post- post- prefix + poser pose v.1 In quot. 1598 at sense 1 after classical Latin postpositus, past participle of postpōnere postpone v. In sense 2 after prepose v. 2. Compare earlier postpone v. and also postposit v.
1. transitive. To place (a person or thing) after or later than another in temporal or serial order, esp. as an indication of relative importance; to rank lower than, subordinate. Obsolete.
