Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, swagger v.

Etymology: Apparently < a first element of uncertain origin (see note) + swagger v. (compare later swagger n.¹).A proposed derivation < belly-swagger (apparently only attested in quot. 1775), while not implausible, is difficult to substantiate. With the first element perhaps compare also bell v.¹, bell v.⁴, or bel adj., although derivation from any of these would pose semantic problems.
