Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Belsen.
Etymology: < Belsen (more fully Bergen-Belsen), the name of a concentration camp in northern Germany between 1943–5 and of the place in which it was located (part of the municipality of Bergen, then in the province of Hanover, now in Lower Saxony).

Of, relating to, or reminiscent of the Belsen concentration camp established in Germany by the Nazis during the Second World War (1939–45), esp. in respect of its horrendousness, horror, or cruelty.The camp was established in 1943, initially as a prisoner of war camp, and was later used as a civilian holding and transit camp. It was not an extermination camp; prisoners died of starvation, exhaustion, and disease. The camp was liberated by British forces in 1945.
