Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin postlīminium.
Etymology: < classical Latin postlīminium right of a banished person or captive to resume civic rights on return from exile, recovery, restoration < post- post- prefix + līmin- , līmen threshold (see limen n.) + -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare postliminy n.Compare earlier occurrence in an English context of the post-classical Latin phrase per postliminium by right of postliminium (used figuratively in the following quot. 1603):1603 S. Daniel Def. Ryme in Panegyrike (new ed.) sig. Hv Learning in these parts, which returning, as it were per postliminium, and heere meeting..with Printing.
