Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: powder n.1, -ous suffix.
Etymology: < powder n.1 + -ous suffix. Compare earlier powdery adj.The following was given in N.E.D. (1907) as an example of this word, with the definition ‘apt to crumble to powder, friable’; however, comparison with Pliny's Latin original (and with Du Pinet's French translation of this) makes it appear much more likely that this is a transmission error for ponderous adj.:1601 P. Holland tr. Pliny Hist. World I. xvi. xl. 490 Cherry-tree wood is pliable, but drier and more powderous [L. ponderosior, Fr. plus pesant].
