Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish potrero.
Etymology: < American Spanish potrero pasture, grassland (1548 in South America), perhaps also narrow plateau or mesa (1684 in an isolated North American attestation) < potro potro n. + -ero -eer suffix1.
1. In the south-western United States and South America: a paddock or pasture for horses or cattle; an enclosed or sheltered piece of grassland.
