Origin: Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Probably imitative of the bird's call. Perhaps compare Twi patú owl.
Any of several nocturnal, insectivorous tropical American birds constituting the genus Nyctibius (family Nyctibiidae), which are related to nightjars and adopt a motionless upright posture, mimicking a dead branch, when resting; esp. (more fully common potoo, grey potoo) N. griseus.
