释义

belirtv.

Brit. /bᵻˈləːt/, U.S. /bəˈlərt/, /biˈlərt/, Scottish English /bᵻˈlɪrt/
Forms: Old English bilyrta (Northumbrian), early Middle English bilirte, late Middle English blert, late Middle English blerte; Scottish 1800s– belirt. Also past tense: Middle English belirt (north-west midlands, in a late copy). Also past participle: early Middle English bilurd, early Middle English bilurt, Middle English belirt (north-west midlands, in a late copy).
Origin: Formed wthin English, by derivation. Etymons: be- prefix, English *lyrtan.
Etymology: < be- prefix + an unattested Old English verb *lyrtan, cognate with Middle High German lürzen , in the same sense < the Germanic base of Old English lort bent, crooked, Middle High German (Rhineland) lurz , lorz left (German (now regional: Central, Bavaria) lurz , lurtsch left, wrong, (of a person) clumsy); compare Middle Dutch loorts , loyrts left (1477 in Teuthonista; < Middle High German), and also (with different ablaut grade: e -grade) Middle High German lerz left, probably originally ‘crooked, bent’, and (with different suffix) Middle High German lerc , lirc , lurc left, probably originally ‘lame’; all perhaps ultimately < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek λορδός bent backward (see lordosis n.). Compare later lirt v.
Scottish (western) in later use. Now rare. Perhaps Obsolete.
transitive. To deceive, cheat, fool.
