Etymology: < be- prefix + light v.2 Compare Old Frisian biliuchta (West Frisian beljochtsje), Middle Dutch belichten, beluchten, Middle Low German belüchten, Middle High German beliuhten (German beleuchten).The following quotation, entered under this word in N.E.D. (1887) and tentatively defined there as ‘to shine up, to dawn’, probably shows a prepositional phrase (compare light n.1 2):a1500 (?a1400) Morte Arthur (1903) l. 1759 We shalle hym haue with-outen wene, To-morow or Any day by lyght.
