Etymology: < Middle French, French praticien (in Middle French also practicien, practisien) physician (1314 in Old French; subsequently from 1715, now usually in sense ‘general practitioner’), legal practitioner (late 14th cent. or earlier), skilled professional or scholar in general (end of the 15th cent.), person who is more interested in and dedicated to the practice of a profession or craft rather than its theory (1674) < practique , pratique practic n.1 + -ien -ian suffix. Compare earlier practiser n. and later practitioner n.
