Etymology: < post n.3 + wagon n.; in spec. use for a mail coach in the Netherlands and Germany, after Dutch postwagen (second half of the 17th cent.), German Postwagen (second half of the 17th cent.).
Now historical.
A horse-drawn wagon capable of travelling quickly. Also: a wagon used to carry mail; esp. a stagecoach or mail coach.Used chiefly of stage or mail coaches in other European countries, esp. the Netherlands and Germany.
