单词 belgic
释义

Belgicadj.n.

Brit. /ˈbɛldʒɪk/, U.S. /ˈbɛldʒɪk/
Forms: 1500s Belgique, 1500s–1600s Belgicke, 1500s–1800s Belgick, 1500s– Belgic.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Belgicus.
Etymology: < classical Latin Belgicus of or connected with the ancient Belgae, in post-classical Latin also with reference to the Low Countries (1557 or earlier) < the name of the Belgae (see Belgae n.) + -icus -ic suffix. Compare Middle French belgic (French †belgique ) (adjective) of or relating to the ancient Belgae (1583), of or relating to the Low Countries or modern Belgium (1671), and also Belgique , the name of modern Belgium (1830; originally a specific use of the adjective). In use with reference to modern Belgium, the French adjective belgique has now been superseded by belge (1831, use as adjective of the name of the people: see Belge n.). Compare further Dutch belgisch of or relating to the Low Countries or (later) modern Belgium (1584; 1566 in an isolated use with reference to the alleged ancient city of Belgis in north-eastern Gaul). With use with reference to the Belgic confession (see sense A. 2 and compare quot. 1586 at Belgium n.) compare post-classical Latin confessio belgica (1581 or earlier). With senses A. 2 and B. (referring to the Low Countries and modern Belgium) compare earlier Belgian adj. and Belgian n.Compare the following earlier uses as a place name, with reference respectively to the Low Countries (quot. 1561; compare post-classical Latin Belgica (1558 or earlier in this sense)) and to the territory of the ancient Belgae (quot. 1565; compare classical Latin Gallia Belgica ):1561 tr. Hist. Strange Wonders sig. B.viii.v It was sene..in the dukedom of Wirtenberge, in Belgicke, and also towarde Hungarye.1565 A. Golding tr. Caesar Martiall Exploytes in Gallia viii. f. 267v He returned to his Legions into Belgicke [L. in Belgium], & wintred at Nemetocerna. Uses of early modern Dutch belgisch to designate contemporary inhabitants of the southern part of the Low Countries appears to have started at a similar time to the earliest uses of Dutch bataafs ‘Batavian’ to designate the inhabitants of the more northerly regions, especially the Dutch Republic (1610: see Batavian adj.): see discussion at Belgium n.
