A freshwater whitefish, Coregonus clupeoides (family Salmonidae), found in Loch Lomond and Loch Eck, Scotland. Cf. skelly n.² 1. The classification of Coregonus is complex and still unresolved. The powan is often regarded as a variety of C. lavaretus, which is widely distributed in northern Eurasia.

2004 Herald (Glasgow) (Nexis) 10 Dec. 11 The ruffe are consuming very large quantities of the eggs of the powan and there is serious concern that they are threatening the spawning success of the powan.
