单词 poverish
释义

poverishv.

Brit. /ˈpɒv(ə)rɪʃ/, U.S. /ˈpɑv(ə)rɪʃ/, Scottish English /ˈpɔv(ə)rɪʃ/
Forms: Middle English porissh, Middle English poueresh, Middle English pouerysh, Middle English pouressh, Middle English poveressh, Middle English poveryssh, 1500s pofferessh, 1500s poueryssh, 1500s pouryshe, 1500s–1600s pouerish, 1500s–1600s 1900s– poverish; also Scottish 1800s povereeze, 1800s– povereese, 1900s– poverise.
Origin: Apparently either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Or (iii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: poor adj., -ish suffix2; French appovriss-, appovrir; French empovriss-, empovrir; French pouveriss-, pouverir.
Etymology: Apparently either < poor adj. (see forms at that entry) + -ish suffix2, or shortened < Middle French appovriss-, extended stem of appovrir to make poor, to become poor (12th cent. in Old French; French appauvrir ; < a- (see a- prefix5) + povre poor adj.), or shortened < Middle French empovriss-, extended stem of empovrir (see impoverish v.), or < Middle French pouveriss-, extended stem of pouverir (rare: see poor v.); compare -ish suffix2. In later use perhaps shortened < impoverish v. Compare earlier poor v.
Now chiefly Scottish.
transitive. To make poor, impoverish.
