Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pourriture.
Etymology: < Middle French, French pourriture decomposition, rot (first half of the 12th cent. in Old French as porreture ) < pourrir to rot (see pourry adj.) + -ure -ure suffix1, with inserted -t- after e.g. nourriture nouriture n.In sense 2 after French pourriture noble (see noble rot n.); compare German Edelfäule (1846 or earlier).
