Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pourpointerie.
Etymology: < French †pourpointerie (1260 in Old French) < pourpoint pourpoint n.1 + -erie -ery suffix.Compare also earlier use of the French phrase ouvrage de pourpointerie ‘pourpointing work’ in an English context:1824 S. R. Meyrick Crit. Inq. into Antient Armour I. 164 The monument of William de Valence exhibits him in hauberk, hood, and chausses, of ouvrage de pourpointerie, or pourpointed work.1872 Chambers's Encycl. I. 419/1 Under Henry III., we find stitched and padded hauberks and chaussés, called ‘ouvrages de pourpointerie.’
