Etymology: Apparently < a first element of unknown origin + cuttle n.¹The β. forms probably arose as a result of a misreading of the α form pourcouttell, with misreading of n for u and of r for t, both of which are common in manuscripts and can also occur in early printed books, which use similar letter shapes.
