Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French poupée.
Etymology: < French poupée doll (c1230 in Old French; earlier in sense ‘bundle of flax’ (11th cent. as popede )), childish person (end of the 14th cent.), mannequin for clothes or hats (1396), pretty woman (beginning of the 16th cent. in Middle French), apparently < an unattested post-classical Latin form *puppa (see poppet n.) + French -ée -y suffix5. Compare Old Occitan popada , pupada . Compare earlier poupe n.
1. A mannequin used by a designer or retailer to display clothes or wigs; a fashion model. Now rare.
