Etymology: < pound v.1 + -ed suffix1.It is unclear whether the Old English form gepūned is to be derived from a prefixed or an unprefixed verb, i.e. pūnian pound v.1 or gepūnian i-pone v.
Crushed into small fragments, or to powder or pulp, by heavy blows; beaten small; comminuted.
