单词 beewort
释义

beewortn.

Brit. /ˈbiːwəːt/, U.S. /ˈbiˌwərt/, /ˈbiˌwɔrt/
Forms: early Old English biouuyrt, early Old English biowyrt, early Old English buuyrt, Old English beovyrt, Old English beowirt, Old English–early Middle English beowyrt, early Middle English beowurt, Middle English beowort, Middle English beoworte, Middle English beuurt, Middle English bewert, Middle English bewort, Middle English beworth, Middle English bewrt, 1500s– beewort.
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old High German bīwurz plant attractive to bees, especially white dead-nettle, water mint (Middle High German bīwurz ) < the Germanic base of bee n.1 + the Germanic base of wort n.1; compare also Old Saxon biniwurt , Old High German biniwurz , both in the sense ‘thyme, common balm’ (for the first element see discussion at bee n.1). Compare the similarly motivated classical Latin apiastrum, denoting any of several varieties of balm.
Now rare (chiefly U.S. in later use).
Originally: any of several plants attractive to bees, spec. balm, Melissa officinalis (now historical). In later use: the plant sweet flag, Acorus calamus.
