Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Potamogale.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Potamogale (see quot. 1860 at main sense) < ancient Greek ποταμός river (see potamic adj.) + γαλῆ weasel (see galeopithecus n.), after scientific Latin Cynogale, genus name of the otter civet (1837).
Zoology.
A monotypic genus of semiaquatic mammals of the family Tenrecidae (order Insectivora), containing only the giant otter shrew, Potamogale velox, which is native to the tropical rainforest of central Africa and feeds mainly on aquatic crustaceans and insects; (also † potamogale) an animal of this genus, a giant otter shrew.
