Etymology: < ancient Greek ποτάμιος of or from a river (applied to various animals; < ποταμός river (see potamic adj.) + -ιος , suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix; compare -ian suffix. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (potēi·miăn, -æ·miăn) /pəʊˈteɪmɪən/, /pəʊˈtæmɪən/.
