Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin potabilis , -ity suffix; potable adj., -ity suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin potabilis potable adj. + -ity suffix, or < potable adj. + -ity suffix: see -bility suffix. Compare post-classical Latin potabilitas (c1260 in a British source), French potabilité (1719). Compare earlier potableness n.
The quality of being suitable or fit for drinking.
