单词 pot-fish
释义

pot-fishn.

Forms: 1700s pott-fish, 1700s–1800s pot-fish.
Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch potvis.
Etymology: < Dutch potvis (1634; probably < pot pot n.1 + vis fish n.1, on account of the shape of its head), with substitution of fish n.1 for the second element. Compare ( < Dutch) German Pottfisch (late 18th cent.), Danish potfisk (1801), Swedish pottfisk (1730); compare also early modern Dutch potshoofd (apparently < the genitive of pot pot n.1 + hoofd head n.1), probably denoting the same animal. Compare earlier pot-walfish n.
Obsolete.
The sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus. In quot. 1799 apparently confused with the narwhal.
