Compare ( < Dutch) German Pottfisch (late 18th cent.), Danish potfisk (1801), Swedish pottfisk (1730); compare also early modern Dutch potshoofd (apparently < the genitive of pot pot n.¹ + hoofd head n.¹), probably denoting the same animal. Compare earlier pot-walfish n.

Obsolete.
