Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pot-au-feu.
Etymology: < French pot-au-feu, pot au feu dish of beef cooked in a broth with vegetables in a pot (1673), pot in which this is cooked (1802) < pot pot n.1 + au on the + feu fire (see feuage n.).
A large traditional French cooking pot; a dish or recipe associated with this, esp. a thick soup of meat and vegetables. Also figurative.
