Etymology: < Anglo-Norman possedir and Middle French posseder to own (1364; French posséder ), variants of Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French possider to possess (1299; < classical Latin possidēre possess v.), with change of medial vowel after Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French possesseur possessor n., possession possession n., and Old French, Middle French possesser possess v. Compare possess v.The late Middle English form pocessede probably shows confusion with possess v. In form posside probably immediately after Middle French possider.
